The dog rose grows on roadsides. It appears on coats of arms. Both things are true and neither cancels the other.
Each flower is carved from rose quartz — three-dimensional, eight millimetres across, a ruby at the centre. Below hangs polished obsidian: volcanic glass, cooled too fast to become a crystal.The common rose, after dark.
