A silver pendant hanging from a black cord against a deep burgundy background, shaped like a small sealed vessel. The lower half is a heavy fluted dome with wide rounded lobes, and above it a narrow waist rises to a large hinged loop. A band of small red sapphires runs around the collar between the two. The narrow sections are covered in fine hand-punched dots, and the raised lobes are polished bright against the darkened metal.
TA close view of the underside of the pendant, where a round topaz is set into the base like the matrix of a seal. A carp is carved into the face of the stone, its tail spread wide and its fins picked out in fine lines. The stone is faceted below the carving, so the light breaks up beneath the fish and it appears to hang in water rather than in mineral. The surrounding silver frame catches a hard highlight along one edge.

A sealed spring.

Carp were kept in the ponds of walled gardens. Monasteries built the ponds and stocked them for the fast days, and the fish moved across Europe that way for centuries.

Rose and blackthorn were the plants hedges were made of — the wall before there were walls. The wild rose is carved by hand around the face of the seal. It grows around the water.
In the water, a fish caught in blue topaz. It moves. It disappears. It comes back to the surface with the light behind it.

Fifteen topazes ring the loop above, red sapphires the collar below. The ground between is Milium. The bail lifts away. What is left is a seal.

A seal does not hide anything. It only says that someone chose to close it.
