The stone is deep raspberry-red and lit from the front so the step cuts show as vertical bands of light. An octagonal frame of small green tsavorites surrounds it, and more tsavorites continue down both shoulders of the band. The metal is dark enough that the green stones read as the outline of the piece.

Rings that open were made to look like rings that do not. That was the point.

Garnet was carried for protection — by pilgrims, by soldiers, by anyone with something worth returning to. The stone here is rhodolite, closer to raspberry than to red, cut so the light comes back in long bands. Around it and down both shoulders, tsavorite: garnet again, in green.

It opens. What goes inside is yours alone.
